Google CEO denies political bias and plans for China search engine

Representative Steve Chabot, a Republican from OH, complained that when he googled the Republican healthcare Bill or the GOP tax cuts, the first several pages listed negative articles.

Then, the Iowa congressman held up his Apple device.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) noted, "By ranking pages, Google's search always favors one page over another". In other words, many people tag Trump's face with the keyword "idiot". He added, "PJ Media found that 96 percent of search results for Trump were from liberal media outlets". Some came to Google's defense.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was forced to explain why searches for the word "idiot" result in images of President Donald Trump to a US congressional panel this morning. Pichai easily explained how the search algorithm crawls indexed sites to produce results that reflect what people are posting to the internet. See, there is no partisan behind the curtain.

The link between the two was mentioned during a congressional grilling of Google chief executive Sundar Pichai.

Republican committee members are expected to question Pichai about allegations Google is biased against conservative voices. The New York Democrat said Tuesday's hearing was the committee's fourth to address the topic - and he suggested he'd move on to other topics as Democrats take control.

CNN's NY offices evacuated due to bomb threat
Chris Cuomo also tweeted about the incident, but said employees expected to be allowed back into the building 'ASAP'. A freeze on pedestrian traffic was lifted and traffic on West 58th Street was to be opened again.

Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, tried to pin down Pichai on privacy during the hearing. This is despite the company has developed a search engine specifically built for the country with over 100 employees working on the project at one point. Google departed China in 2010. "Getting access to information is an important human right".

Lieu was referring to previous sessions with executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google since the 2016 United States election, in which big tech companies have been hauled before Congress to defend themselves against allegations of political bias.

The high-profile hearing on Capitol Hill attracted Roger Stone and Infowars' Alex Jones, who sat in the audience.

Evercore's DiClemente said he was satisfied with Pichai's handling of barbed questions from Republicans and Democrats. Pichai fell back on Google's common defense that users are able to turn off location tracking, although many users are not aware of their settings. "I know Google's attitude, 'The algorithm made us do it, ' but I don't know that I buy that".

Responding to a question about Google's search dominance, Pichai pointed to Amazon's dominance in online shopping.

Yet, the emails suggest it was more than just "a periodic review", since the effort appears to have been organized through an internal discussion group called "Resist"-a common label used by opponents of the agenda of President Donald Trump". Facebook (FB) and Twitter (TWTR) officials previously took their lumps in heated hearings amid mounting consumer mistrust and regulatory scrutiny toward companies with large swaths of personal information. These are areas where continued oversight and possibly privacy legislation could be done in a bipartisan fashion. "It is past time for Congress to step in and do its job".
