Graham Says Trump Open to Wall Trade-offs

Trump announced a partial shutdown of the federal government last week, after the Senate failed to accept a $5 billion spending proposal for border security demanded by the president.

"There will be the physical wall and then parts of the wall that you can actually see through because it will rely on sensors and other technology", he told Fox News in February 2017. Lindsey Graham, who said he hoped to end the shutdown by offering Democrats incentives to get them to vote for wall funding.

"To my Democratic friends: There will never be a deal without wall funding", Graham said.

Kelly said the solid concrete wall Trump had touted throughout his campaign and early administration was a past plan, and the president was embracing plans for other types of structures.

A former Marine general who led the military command responsible for Latin America, Kelly was Trump's Homeland Security secretary before becoming White House chief of staff in July past year.

Trump was cooped up in the White House after cancelling a vacation to his private Florida club.

While the president threatened on Friday to close the southern USA border with Mexico over the shutdown, the White House shifted their focus and placed the blame on Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi.

"The President still says "wall" - oftentimes frankly he'll say "barrier" or "fencing", now he's tended toward steel slats".

Trump and Xi agreed to a ceasefire in the trade war, deciding to hold off on imposing more tariffs for 90 days starting December 1 while they negotiate a deal to end the dispute following months of escalating tensions. The veteran South Carolina Senator, a long-time advocate for immigration reform, said that even he would not provide DACA for $5 billion, because Democrats had refused to provide Trump with the full $25 billion requested for a border wall in return for legalization of all DACA-eligible illegal aliens earlier this year.

She continued: "Always saying "wall" or "no wall" is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border".

It should be pointed out too that Mr Kelly himself had said early in the Trump presidency that it would be a wall, and not a fence. He also said the compromise should include changes in federal law to discourage people from trying to enter the United States illegally. Mr Trump claimed the deaths were "strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally".

The White House and Democrats are locked between the $5.6 billion Trump is demanding and the $1.3 billion Democrats have offered.

The House and Senate gaveled in and out of session in under five minutes on Thursday. "Now we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown".

"The president is firm in his commitment to make sure we get money for border security, and there will never be a 60-vote deal in the Senate that doesn't include money for border security-slash-wall".

In the Los Angeles Times interview, Kelly conceded that Trump often pressed against the legal boundaries of his role, as the former secretary of state, Rex W. Tillerson, said recently. "Now is a good time to fold in some way ... because once Democrats take control of the House, he is going to have a very losing hand".

The government is entering day nine of a partial government shut down with negotiations at a stand still.

Democrats maintain that they have already presented the White House with three options to end the shutdown, none of which fund the wall, and insist that it's Trump's move.
