LAKANA Today's winter solstice will feature full moon and meteor shower

After Friday each afternoon will gradually see more and more daylight until the summer solstice in June. But today's winter solstice is actually rather special, according to CNN.

The first day of winter, Friday, Dec. 21, will not be your typical winter solstice.

This is when when the sun appears to be at its southernmost point in the sky; as such, the Southern Hemisphere has its longest day of the year, and the Northern Hemisphere has its shortest day of the year, on the December solstice, according to EarthSky. On the solstice, the sun is set to rise at 8:09 a.m. local time at Stonehenge, and by then the visitors to the monument will be at the giant circle of mysterious stones.

Why it happens: "Because the Earth is tilted on its rotational axis, we experience seasons here on Earth".

The date marks the 24-hour period with the fewest hours of daylight in the year, which is why it is known as the shortest day and longest night. The full moon will happen December 22 around 12:49 p.m.

There's also a meteor shower.

Trump advises Fed not to consider interest rate hike
Powell himself could provide clarity in his news conference if he indicates where he thinks the "neutral rate" is. While the USA economy looks strong right now, there are signs of a potential slowdown.

The December Solstice occurs when the Sun reaches its most southerly declination, that's when the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the Sun. You could possibly see 10 shooting stars every hour, depending on where you're watching from.

The American Meteor Society says at the peak, there should be about 11 sporadic meteors per hour just before dawn.

For those who want to celebrate, there are a number of events in Seattle.

In Ireland, people gather at Newgrange, a massive 5,000 years old gravesite, to witness the sunrise lighting up the ancient tomb.

Friday night is the best time to see the full cold moon.
