OnePlus gets first dibs on the Snapdragon 855 with new phone line

Qualcomm is betting big that 5G will jump start the saturated smartphone market. Verizon's 5G service for smartphones will only begin rolling out in "early 2019". "Every Android vendor is working on 5G right now".

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset succeeds the popular Snapdragon 845 processor, which powered some of the most popular phones of 2018, including OnePlus 6 and 6T, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9 series, Xiaomi Mi 8 and many more. Notably it will use a millimeter wave network and should deliver some fast speeds. Qualcomm announced Elite Gaming.

Still, as the driving force behind Saudi Arabia's military involvement in Yemen, MBS has been under heightened scrutiny. The White House issued a veto threat for that resolution, even as Pompeo and Mattis spoke with the senators.

"It will recognize who and what you're capturing", says Qualcomm Snapdragon boss Alex Katouzian. The Chinese manufacturer didn't give any hints on the device's release period, but it's expected to happen within the first half. As a reminder, 5G promises to deliver data speeds of over 1Gbps, potentially hitting 10Gbps, but at the event, the devices were reaching only around 130-140Mbps. Meanwhile, support for HEIF images - which can store multiple versions of shots, depth maps, and more in a single file - should both maximize on-device storage and make it easier to share those images. It is expected that Samsung's next Galaxy smartphone will include this chip when it's announced in February next year, and so Galaxy owners with access to 5G networks will be able to take advantage of the speeds promised by the next-gen wireless technology.

Alongside larger manufacturers and US carriers, OnePlus was at the summit with some news for the UK. It had been rumored that the company would change its naming system and call the chip the 8150-it used the internal name of "sm8150"-but Qualcomm went with the less confusing Snapdragon 855 moniker". You can also expect some other devices from the brand, hopefully one or two that come to America. The company has said nothing about its product roadmap, but there has been some speculation that a 5G iPhone won't arrive till 2020, which looks highly likely. The potential limitation of 5G could be a reason why it's unlikely we'll see 5G-capable iPhones next year.
