Marshall often shrugged off similar criticism, telling the New York Times, "But I like corny".

Award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay thanked Marshall for breaking ground as a female director.

Marshall was born Carole Penny Marshall in the Bronx, New York, on October 15, 1943.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be announced, according to Marshall's family. She attached a commercial the two starred in together in 1996.
