Putin Says U.S. Syria Pullout `Right Thing to Do'

Putin Says U.S. Syria Pullout `Right Thing to Do'

All the speculation about Russia's supposed aspirations for the world dominance are nothing but a "mentality imposed by some to achieve internal goals", the president said.

The Trump administration on December 4 said it would withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 60 days if Russian Federation doesn't stop its violations. "Are you no longer afraid?"

The tendency to underestimate the threat of nuclear war has been growing, which leads to the "very dangerous" trend of lowering the threshold of using nuclear weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin has noted. The U.S. has said it has no plans to deploy new missiles after pulling out of the INF treaty. "Now we hear that Russian Federation has the advantage. but this is all about parity when it comes to our arsenals".

Earlier this month North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, at US request formally declared Russian Federation to be in violation of the INF and demanded that it halt activity that breaches it.

Russian Federation says the missile's range puts it outside the treaty altogether and is not as long as Washington alleges, meaning that it is fully compliant with the INF.

The US "has done the right thing", Putin said, reaffirming the long-held Russian argument that the US presence in Syria was illegitimate because it wasn't vetted by the UN Security Council or approved by Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. Both Moscow and Washington signed the treaty, which banned ground-launched nuclear missiles. "OK, we know how to ensure our security", he said.

"For mankind this is very bad, because it will take us to a unsafe point", Putin said, expressing concern about moves to lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, including the USA decision to produce lower-yield missiles.

"I believe humanity has the necessary common sense and desire to survive so as to avoid these extremes".

The Russian president noted that the nation's hard currency reserves have increased from $432 billion at the start of the year to $464 billion now.

In more conciliatory language, Putin rallied to Trump's defense against his domestic opponents, warning that the Democrats' success in the midterm elections to the House of Representatives will lead to "new attacks" on the US president.

Putin pledged that the government will create incentives to speed up growth.

Putin, 66, who jealously protects his privacy and that of his close family, was replying to a question posed by a reporter at his annual press conference, which focused mainly on worldwide relations and the state of the economy.

Speaking at his annual news conference, Putin also scoffed at Western claims he wants to dominate the world, and says Western countries are antagonising Russian Federation for their own domestic reasons, and at their own peril. "These are great American heroes", Trump said. US officials say the withdrawal from the INF was prompted by Russian violations of the treaty, but Moscow vehemently denies any breaches.
