Shaktikanta Das assumes charge as RBI Governor

The bank now plans to submit the final recommendation for the CEO post to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) after the next board meeting on January 9, the fifth largest private-sector lender by assets said in a statement.

"I have convened a meeting with chief executive officers and managing directors of public sector banks tomorrow [Thursday] morning", ANI quoted him as saying.

Addressing media hours after taking over as the 25th Governor of RBI, the former Union finance secretary, said, "I will work as a team with other officials in RBI in the best interest of the economy and try and take measures in a timely manner on issues, on aspects which the economy requires or which are in the best interest of the Indian economy".

The former bureaucrat has replaced Urjit Patel, who abruptly resigned on Monday after a long-drawn feud with the government over issues related to governance and the autonomy of the central bank. He also asserted that the public centre banks are going to be on the top of his priority list.

Earlier, a Parliamentary Committee had expressed apprehension over the PCA framework and asked the RBI to "relax or review" PCA in case of banks where even retail banking is prohibited. Twitteratti pointed out immediately that unlike previous governors like Raghuram Rajan and Urjit Patel, Shaktikanta Das does not have a degree in business or economics, but in history. The government is not just a stakeholder, it also runs the economy and country. "I will like to believe that all issues, howsoever contentious, can be resolved through discussions".

Teen arrested in murder of pregnant 17-year-old in Indiana
Rouhselang told her mother she was meeting Trejo behind their home to discuss the pregnancy at around 11 p.m. on Saturday. Her body was found in a dumpster in their hometown of Mishawaka, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of Chicago.

When asked about the tiff between the RBI and the Central Government, the Governor said every institute has its autonomy and should have accountability as well. He said that as the new RBI chief he will try and uphold professionalism, core values, credibility and autonomy of this institution.

Elaborating on his communication approach, the governor said decision making had become far more complex in today's world and consultation with stakeholders was very important. "Banking is an important segment in our economy and it's facing several challenges that need to be dealt with".

The governor was the face of one of the Narendra Modi government's most controversial policies - the abolition and replacement of high-value bank notes in an attempt to crack down on black money.

RBI board is likely to sign off on terms of reference of the committee that will look into the issue of transfer of surplus RBI reserves.

Das said, "There are a number of issues ahead".
