Theresa May postpones vote on Brexit deal

May said she would defer the vote so she could seek "assurances" from the European Union and bring the deal back to Parliament.

Prime Minister Theresa May is to travel to Europe to seek concessions on her Brexit deal, after calling off a crunch House of Commons vote in which she was expected to go down to a heavy defeat.

May's decision to pull the vote at the last minute demonstrates the weakness of her leadership and the precarious nature of the confidence and supply deal the Conservatives have with the DUP to find a majority.

"From listening to those views", she continued after the noise in the chamber ebbed, "it is clear that while there is broad support for numerous key aspects of the deal, on one issue - the Northern Ireland backstop - there remains widespread and deep concern".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has slammed May for canceling the crucial vote, claiming the PM has had to delay her own government's vote because her Brexit deal is "disastrous".

"If you want Brexit, make sure you get it, and that's about this deal", Mrs May said.

An updated House of Commons business statement said there would be a statement on "business of the House" after May's address, indicating a sudden change to the parliamentary schedule.

She then asked whether or not the House of Commons really wanted to deliver Brexit - and if it was willing to re-open the political division within the country by challenging the 2016 vote of the British people to leave the bloc.

"It matters certainly to them, but it matters a great deal to us as well", he said.

Theresa May says she won't run in next general election
In her speech following Brady's announcement, May also said a change of leader would wreak havoc on Britain's exit from the EU. A British Conservative Party official says Prime Minister Theresa May will face a no-confidence vote from party lawmakers.

May spoke over the weekend to European Council President Donald Tusk - who will chair an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday - and European leaders including Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, amid signs she was seeking to tweak the deal to win over skeptical lawmakers.

The Government was also looking at "new ways of empowering the House of Commons" to ensure that any provision for a backstop has "democratic legitimacy and to enable the House to place its own obligations on the Government to ensure that the backstop can not be in place indefinitely", said Mrs May.

May insisted the agreement hammered out with the European Union after a year and a half of negotiations was "the best deal that is negotiable".

May's move on the eve of a crucial parliamentary vote opens up an array of options for the United Kingdom, including a disorderly Brexit with no deal, another referendum on European Union membership, or a last minute renegotiation of May's deal.

One of May's close allies, the EU, Work and Pensions Secretary, Amber Rudd, has broken cabinet ranks to float a possible Plan B if parliament rejects May's plan.

"That's because it is a good deal, it's the only deal and it's important we don't let the flawless be the enemy of the good". If reports of her peanut butter consumption-first noted in the British tabloid The Daily Mail-are accurate, it seems likely that the prime minister will need multiple jars to cope with the stress of the coming weeks.

The court rejected arguments from both the United Kingdom government and the European Commission that Article 50, the two-year-long process that triggers a member state's departure from the EU, could not be revoked unilaterally.

"I politely suggest that in any courteous, respectful and mature environment, allowing the house to have a say would be the right and, dare I say it, the obvious course to take", Speaker Bercow said.

Monday's turmoil sent the pound to a 20-month low against the dollar of $1.2550.
