Thousands of O2 users stuck offline in mobile phone blackout

Tens of millions of smartphone users in Britain lost internet access today after a software glitch brought down O2's data network.

Thousands of O2 customers in Northern Ireland have been left without data on Thursday morning due to a technical issue.

O2 confirmed a third party equipment supplier - identified as Swedish manufacturer Ericsson in some reports - identified a global software issue in their system which has impacted the operator and other operators around the world.

The company is blaming software issues at one of its suppliers for the problems. "SoftBank will work together with Ericsson and investigate this issue to prevent further recurrence", SoftBank said in a statement. For the millions of users who are out and about and rely on smartphone maps to get around, it's worth considering that apps like Google Maps allow customers to download maps on Wi-Fi and view them offline.

'We have been working hard on resolving the United Kingdom data issue since early this morning.

Aside from being a huge inconvenience for data-hungry consumers, the O2 network outage is also causing issues for things such as public transportation and daily operations of local businesses. The difficulties were first reported at about 05:30 this morning.

"Updates will be shared here as soon they are available". According to two people directly involved, an issue relating to software in the systems provided by Ericsson has been identified.

The Sky Help team, responding to customer concerns on Twitter, say the problem has been pinpointed and staff are working with O2 to resolve the situation. "We are really sorry and working as hard and as fast as we can to fix this".
