Udall Issues Statement On NAFTA Deal

President Donald Trump said late Saturday he will formally terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement soon, a move created to put pressure on Congress to approve a new deal he signed during the G-20 summit.

"I will be formally terminating NAFTA shortly", Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way home from a G20 summit in Argentina.

Trump signed a new deal here Friday with the president of Mexico and Canada's prime minister, following through on a campaign promise he made to renegotiate the long controversial NAFTA agreement.

Separately, the fate of the new, wide-ranging trade treaty among the United States, Canada and Mexico will soon be in the hands of lawmakers in all three nations.

Democrats mulling presidential runs in 2020, as well as labor and environmental groups, were already gearing up for a showdown with Trump over trade, and the revised North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will give them an opening for a new line of attack.

Trump added, "This is an awesome deal for our farmers. The deal eliminates Canada's unfair Class 6 and Class 7 milk pricing schemes, opens additional access to US dairy into Canada, and imposes new disciplines on Canada's supply management system", Perdue said. "Without this, he's got little leverage over Congress, and Congress has got detractors on both sides - on the Democrat and the Republican side - who don't really like the deal".

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico increased from $8.9 billion to $39 billion under NAFTA.

"We appreciate the administration's continued efforts to modernize our nation's existing trade agreements and help grow USA automotive manufacturing with new agreements like the USMCA", said Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council.

"Today's signing comes after two years of pointless uncertainty and reckless threats to NAFTA from the Trump administration, which raised roadblocks to investment and economic progress across New Mexico".

The issue could ultimately be decided by the US courts.

Even as he suggested he would make such a drastic move, he played down its potential impact, adding that he would have no problem reverting to a "pre-Nafta" environment.

Trump had forced Canada and Mexico to renegotiate the 24-year-old agreement because he said it encouraged US companies to move jobs to low-wage Mexico. "I want to see how many Democratic votes come on board for this". Senator Marco Rubio of Florida tweeted on Friday that the deal as drafted would put Florida's seasonal vegetable growers "out of business".
