Federer triumphs over Serena in 'super cool' Hopman Cup encounter

Federer triumphs over Serena in 'super cool' Hopman Cup encounter

The match will be the first time the two 37-year-olds, who have with 43 Grand Slam singles titles between them, face each other.

As it turned out, the tie was decided by the mixed doubles, after both Federer and Williams won their earlier singles matches.

The mixed doubles are contested in a short-set format with tiebreaks at 3-3 but that still means two matches in a day for the four players.

According to BBC, Switzerland, who won the cup previous year, will play Greece on Thursday in their final round-robin match, and the U.S. will take on Great Britain.

The 37-year-old will face off against rising star Frances Tiafoe in Tuesday's tie against the U.S., before playing Williams in the mixed doubles. After that slip, Williams took the next two sets.

As Tennis.com notes, Williams said: "You know, I've been training in the off-season to be ready for Roger". "We just have the huge advantage with the serve, with the return, with the athletic ability", says Roger Federer.

"I admire everything she has done both on and off the court", Federer said.

Roger Federer won the battle but it was all laughs with Serena Williams after the match.

Lady Gaga Kicks Off Las Vegas Residency With Star-Studded Affair
A new video teaser has been published and fans believe that Gaga has brought back her character Petga from ARTPOP . Lady Gaga revealed the debut of her new Las Vegas residency ENIGMA last night at MGM's Park Theater.

Federer: 'People talk about her serve so much and I see why it's such a wonderful serve - you just can't read it'. "We grew up together, really, and after all these years we've actually never done this and so this was super cool that we got to do this at such a pinnacle point in both our careers".

It was the first time the stars had ever gone head-to-head, with Federer and Swiss partner Belinda Bencic beating United States pair Williams and Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in their Group B clash.

"It was a great experience", Williams said.

Ahead of that tie, Federer said: "The problem is it's the first of January". I really enjoyed playing against Serena.

Switzerland swept Britain in its opener when Federer had a masterclass win over British player Cameron Norrie in his opening match.

But Williams lifted in the big moments, breaking Bencic in the final game of the second set to level the scores, before powering to victory in the third.

Federer eventually clinched it for reigning champion by claiming the winning point in the truncated tiebreak used in mixed doubles with a flawless angled volley.
