Hillary Clinton weighs in as partial government shutdown becomes longest in history

The partial us government shutdown entered a record 22nd day on Saturday, as President Donald Trump remains steadfast in his demand for $5.7 billion to build a Mexico border wall and Democrats in Congress determined to refuse the funds.

Trump, referring to a reporter from the "Amazon Washington Post", hit back at the notion that he has no plan for the ongoing shutdown.

Here's what Trump's tweeted: "Democrats should come back to Washington and work to end the Shutdown, while at the same time ending the disgusting humanitarian crisis at our Southern Border". Although Trump had publicly raised the specter of declaring a national emergency and using disaster funds to pay for new wall construction, Trump appeared to have at least temporarily backed off that idea as of 11 January 2019. "Many Hispanics will be coming over to the Republican side, watch!"

It was not clear what a potential compromise between the White House and Congress might entail.

First, Trump said no to scaling back the $5.7 billion he wants for construction of a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, kneecapping Pence's early effort to test Democrats' appetite for a smaller number.

Opponents say that a unilateral move by the president over the sensitive border issue would be constitutional overreach and set a unsafe precedent in similar controversies.

Trump on Saturday said that the Democrats could "solve the Shutdown in 15 minutes".

Meanwhile, a Trump ally says the president isn't giving in on his demands for a border wall.

While Trump on Saturday three times cited a "humanitarian crisis" at the border, he also tied the debate to his 2016 campaign promise: "Part of that promise was a Wall at the Southern Border".

The White House's hope is that once lawmakers are at home this weekend and hear complaints about the shutdown from their constituents, they will be more open to negotiating when they're back in Washington on Monday.

President Donald Trump is refusing to approve a budget unless it includes funds for a wall on the Mexican border.

Last week, the talks broke down during a contentious meeting at the White House at which Trump walked out when told by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, that she would continue to oppose the wall in border security negotiations, even if the government was reopened.

Trump has been counseled by outside advisers to move toward declaring a national emergency for the "crisis" that he says exists at the southern border.

Subsequent tweets today revisited various Trump talking points - Crooked Hillary, 13 angry Democrats, Witch Hunt, FBI agents and their lovers, elections have consequences, etc. "I don't want to give them an easy way out". "I'd rather have the Supreme Court rule and then work with the Democrats on DACA".

But the measures are unlikely to be approved by the Senate, which is controlled by Mr Trump's Republicans.

He added that "nothing has changed" regarding governmental strategy on border security for years. The White House also was eyeing military construction funds, another politically hard choice because the money would be diverted from a backlog of hundreds of projects at bases around the nation.

"There has to be some basis for declaring an emergency when both houses of Congress have concluded" there isn't one, said Walter Dellinger, who served as acting Solicitor General under President Bill Clinton.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request to clarify who is now in the White House with the president.

The assessment from Graham, who has become close to Trump, suggested the shutdown could last for weeks longer, if not months, inflicting additional financial pain on the 800,000 federal workers who have been idled or required to work without pay for the duration.
