Hopman Cup reality saddens Federer

Roger Federer became the most successful player in Hopman Cup history when he led Switzerland to a 2-1 win in an enthralling final of the mixed teams tournament in Perth Saturday.

The win gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead in the tie - enough to book them a spot in Saturday's final given they already beat Great Britain (3-0) and the USA (2-1) earlier in the tournament.

After the result Federer and Bencic prevailed in straight sets with scores of 4-2 and 4-3 was announced, the pair gave an on-court interview in which Williams hailed Federer as "the greatest of all time." .

It all came down to a thrilling mix doubles with the Swiss coming up trumps 4-0, 1-4, 4-3.

On Thursday, the Greek Team was opposed to Team Switzerland in the Hopman Cup in Perth.

A new ATP World Team Cup tournament is set to be introduced in Australia next year, with the Hopman Cup nearly certain to make way for the 24-team event. "Playing here as a team with your partner, playing the mixed which is exciting, I will miss it".

With the tournament now in the balance at 1-1, it all came down the mixed doubles pairing.

Federer will be bidding for a seventh Australian Open title and third in a row when the year's first grand slam begins in Melbourne on January 14.

Rockets GM says Harden could be best offensive player ever

"And for us as well, and we wanted to.to win".

Fittingly, it was Federer who served out the match in the third set tie-break, having been unable to do so earlier in the set.

The Hopman Cup will be replaced by an ATP tournament from 2020.

Germany hit back fast and hard in the second to break Bencic courtesy of some great net play by Zverev, and Kerber held for 3-1.

Muguruza withdrew from the mixed doubles rubber with a left thigh injury that troubled her during the singles clash and was replaced by American teenager Whitney Osuigwe, ranked 201 in the world, as Spain went down 4-2 4-2. "Obviously it would be heartbreaking", she said.

The 37-year-old Swiss superstar surprisingly ended up losing out to the Greek couple and handed the very young stars a flattering win in their early careers that they will truly never forget.

"I don't know the draw yet, I don't know who my first round opponent is, I don't know if I play on Monday or day or night".
