Kamala Harris jumps into presidential race

Kamala Harris, the Democratic senator from California, announced Monday her 2020 White House bid, becoming the first Indian-American woman to run for United States presidency and only the second African-American woman to do so. If successful, she'd be the country's second African-American president and the first woman to hold the office.

When asked about how she would have handled the civil war in Syria differently than Trump - who suddenly announced he was withdrawing United States troops from the war-torn Middle Eastern nation last month - the California Democrat did not take issue with the substance of Trump's position but rejected his style.

She launched her campaign on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr Day, with an announcement on ABC's Good Morning America.

"My parents were very active in the civil-rights movement, and that's the language that I grew up hearing", she said.

Harris was far from the only Democratic hopeful, declared or otherwise, who was out and about on what would have been the civil-rights leader's 90th birthday - evidence that thorny issues of race, gender and ethnic tensions will be prominent in the coming primary battles among an already dense and growing field of candidates.

Kamala Harris announced Monday that she is running for president in 2020, arguing that the time has come to fight against what she views as the injustices of the past two years of the Trump presidency.

"My concern is that we can not conduct our foreign policy through tweets", Harris said during her first press conference as a presidential candidate. The future of the country depends on you, and millions of others, lifting our voices to fight for our American values.

Unlike Warren, Gillibrand, or Castro, Harris is not initially forming a presidential exploratory committee, but instead immediately launching a full-scale presidential campaign.

Where and when to watch Sunday's total lunar eclipse in AZ
People will be able to watch a total lunar eclipse and blood moon in the county overnight on Sunday and early on Monday morning. Popularly known as a " blood moon ", these are relatively rare events, though this is the third of three in the previous year .

Senator Harris joins what is expected to be a wide-open race for the Democratic presidential nomination. She may not be the only black candidate in the field, with others like New Jersey Senator Cory Booker also considering a run.

Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Democratic nomination, is considering a campaign.

Before her first term as a USA senator, Harris previously served as California's attorney general and, prior to that, as district attorney of San Francisco. Her sister Maya, who will be her campaign chair, is a former senior adviser to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

In the first 30 minutes after her announcement, Harris received individual online contributions from all 50 states, spokesman Ian Sams said on Twitter. Harris has also planned a campaign rally on Sunday in Oakland, where she was born. If successful, the goal would be to rack up a series of wins in the Southeastern states of the old Confederacy, where the most powerful force within the Democratic primary electorate is African-Americans. She also has been contacting donors to line up potential support. She has said she will reject corporate political action committee money.

Harris' campaign will focus on reducing the high cost of living with a middle-class tax credit, pursuing immigration and criminal justice changes and a Medicare-for-all healthcare system, aides said.

"All she has to show for her brief time in the Senate is a radically liberal voting record", RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens said in a statement.

"I think it is a false choice to suggest that communities do not want law enforcement", Harris said.

When she ran in 2003 and unseated her onetime boss, San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan, she became the first black woman to be elected district attorney in California.
