Mitt Romney vs Jerry Falwell, Jr: Two Takes on 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'

On Tuesday, Utah Senator-elect and former 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney penned an op-ed criticizing President Donald Trump. In a tweet Tuesday night, Parscale said Romney "lacked the ability to save this nation" and contended that Trump "has saved it". Think of it as Romney's audition to replace retiring Senator Jeff Flake.

Romney pledges he will work alongside Trump and other members of the Senate to improve the country, but it remains to be seen how aggressive he'll be in standing up to the president.

"A presidency shapes the public character of the nation", Romney wrote, referencing American leaders of the past. "And it is in this province where the incumbent's shortfall has been most glaring", wrote Romney. But issues of foreign policy are more complex, and the president has achieved a great deal for conservatives - something Romney readily admitted in his article.

"It is not that all of the president's policies have been misguided", he added, noting much of Trump's domestic policies and parts of his foreign policies are ones "mainstream Republicans have promoted for years".

Romney's critique is getting full coverage on all the national media which has been openly hostile to Trump all along. Romney won the Utah seat long held by GOP Senator Orrin Hatch in the November midterm elections.

"From Romney's own standpoint, I don't understand strategically why you would try to carve out being the anti-Trump before you're even sworn in as a freshman", he said. The two had dinner later in the month, and Romney called Trump "the very man who can lead us", Reuters reported.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday hit back at incoming Sen.

Suspected Gas Explosion in Russia Kills at Least 3
In 2015, at least five people were killed when a gas explosion damaged an apartment building in the southern city of Volgograd. The blast reportedly happened at around 6am local time, when many people were sleeping on what is a Russian public holiday.

In addition to getting the Trump-backed criminal justice reform bill passed - his biggest legislative accomplishment to date - Lee was among few Republicans applauding the president's move to pull USA troops out of Syria.

"I think it's gonna backfire on him", he said to Neil Cavuto.

Mr Trump's manager for the 2020 presidential campaign accused Mr Romney of jealousy.

Her comments came less than 24 hours after Romney published the op-ed in the Washington Post criticizing the president's conduct in office.

Romney attacked Trump's foreign policy decisions as risky for America's moral leadership in the world. Democrats don't have to worry about the three-ring circus and civil war that is engulfing their party's 2020 nomination campaign because so-called Republicans are forcing us to spend valuable time, money, and resources in re-nominating our president.

"Without a doubt, rhetorically at least, the two senators are now in different places when it comes to the president", said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University.
