Mother dies after falling down subway stairs carrying 1-year-old daughter

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which also is investigating, calls Goodson's death "a heartbreaking tragedy".

A CT mother died after falling down the stairs leading to a NY subway with her 1-year-old daughter and stroller in tow.

Ms Goodson (pictured) was unconscious when police arrived and was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Goodson's infant daughter was not injured in the fall, cops said.

These are the steps Malaysia was carrying her daughter in a stroller down when she fell.

"That's terrifying, and there should be more elevator access in the subways", Upper West Side resident Elisa Caref told CBS New York.

Police have said that it is not clear if Ms Goodson passed away due to the fall, or if she suffered from a medical condition.

Police said it's unknown whether the child was in the pram at the time of the incident. Her brother, Dieshe Goodson, described her to WABC-TV as a very protective person and that she was like his twin. Only about a quarter of the city's 472 subway stations have elevators, and the elevators that do exist are often out of service. "Washington's [D.C.'s] subway, which was built in the 1970s and is much smaller than New York's, has far more elevators".

Washington State Officials Declare State Of Emergency As Measles Outbreak Continues
The disease is contagious from approximately four days before the characteristic rash appears to four days after the rash appears. The outbreak near Portland has sickened 35 people in OR and Washington since January 1, with 11 more cases suspected.

The MTA later issued a statement Goodson's death, stating that they hope to better accessibility in its stations.

The lack of elevators makes it hard for people in wheelchairs to use New York's subway system, and disability-rights activists have staged frequent protests over the issue.

Malaysia Goodson, 22, fell down the stairs at the 7th Avenue B/D station at about 8 p.m., authorities said.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's office told reporters that the MTA needs to "make accessibility a priority".

It's unclear if the fall was accidental or if some sort of medical condition contributed to Goodson's fall.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for the little girl's education.

This is a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened.
"He said his sister was loved by all, and he's been getting hundreds of condolence messages on social media", NBC New York reported about Goodson.
