Suspected Gas Explosion in Russia Kills at Least 3

Russia's emergencies ministry told Tass news agency that four people had been pulled alive from the partly collapsed block in Magnitogorsk, an industrial city in Russia's Chelyabinsk region near the border with Kazakhstan.

Almost 1,400 rescue workers searched in temperatures of -17 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit).

The blast reportedly happened at around 6am local time, when many people were sleeping on what is a Russian public holiday.

National television said some 50 people could be trapped under the rubble.

"We are working carefully because there is a risk that the building will collapse".

At least four people are dead and dozens missing after a suspected gas explosion ripped through an apartment building in southern Russian Federation on Monday, state media reported.

Local authorities initially said 68 of those registered in the collapsed section of the building were unaccounted for, but later tracked down some of them. A search and rescue effort is underway involving 469 emergency workers.

In 2015, at least five people were killed when a gas explosion damaged an apartment building in the southern city of Volgograd.

Emergency personnel work at the site of collapsed apartment building after a suspected gas blast in Magnitogorsk, Russia December 31, 2018.

Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Magnitogorsk after being notified of the tragedy.

The explosion shattered windows of nearby buildings, according to a local resident speaking on Echo of Moscow radio. Investigators opened a criminal probe into the accident, with the FSB security service confirming the blast had been the result of a gas explosion.

Deadly gas explosions are relatively common in Russian Federation where much of the infrastructure dates back to the Soviet era and safety requirements are often ignored.
