Trump adviser Roger Stone charged in Mueller inquiry

Roger Stone, a longtime ally of US President Donald Trump and adviser to his 2016 presidential campaign, has been charged with making false statements and witness tampering, according to a grand jury indictment made public by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office.

"Roger Stone briefed "multiple" Trump campaign officials about the imminent release of stolen Democratic emails by WikiLeaks during the 2016 presidential campaign and then sought to obstruct a congressional inquiry into the matter, telling one close associate: "'Stonewall it.

Stone was arrested in Florida on Friday before dawn, prompting Trump to lash out again about a "Witch Hunt" against him.

The world woke up on Friday to the news that President Donald Trump's longtime confidant and advisor, Roger Stone, had been arrested in connection to Special Counsel Robert Muller's Russian Federation investigation.

On what he hopes to gain in giving multiple interviews: "I think the way I was treated on Thursday is extraordinary", he said, citing the slew of Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

Mr Stone, who appeared at court in shackles later in the morning, did not enter a plea and was released on a $US250,000 ($348,000) bond.

Stone served as an adviser to Trump for years before he ran for president.

"Mr. Stone, during his time as a student at George Washington University, was a junior scheduler on the Nixon reelection committee. Mr. Nowhere in the Presidential Daily Diaries from 1972 to 1974 does the name "Roger Stone" appear".

During Trump's elections campaign, Stone repeatedly boasted about having links to WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange, yet later backtracked on such statements.

Could it be Donald Trump who instructed them at that later paragraph?

It follows the utter debacle that was the 2016 music festival organised by rapper Ja Rule and entrepreneur Billy McFarland . Almost two years later, the Rolles say they haven't heard a peep from anyone connected to Fyre Media or the festival.

The charges Stone faces mainly relate to an alleged relationship he had with Wikileaks around the time the whistle-blower group released stolen emails that seriously - some would argue fatally - damaged the campaign of Hillary Clinton. It also doesn't say that Stone had any special knowledge of WikiLeaks' plans.

After WikiLeaks released its first batch of the Podesta emails on October 7, an associate of a senior Trump campaign official sent a text message to Stone that read "well done", according to the indictment.

Mr Stone says he believes his arrest in the special counsel's Russian Federation probe was "politically motivated" and he's vowing to plead not guilty and fight the charges.

The indictment doesn't accuse any campaign officials of wrongdoing or say that they coordinated directly with WikiLeaks.

Known for his political antics and hard-ball tactics, Stone has reveled in being a Washington wheeler-dealer dating back to the Nixon administration.

The special counsel alleges that Stone lied about his interactions with WikiLeaks to the House Intelligence Committee, according to the indictment (pdf). The indictment says Trump campaign associates sought disclosure of emails the US says were hacked by Russian Federation.

"Stone cold since 1968" on the back. "I will not bear false witness against the president", Stone said. Those Podesta messages, which turned into a damaging story for the Clinton campaign, were released that October 7th, just hours after a 2005 video of Trump bragging about groping women was unearthed.

Stone's problem, like Michael Flynn's, is not what he did but what he said about what he did.

"It makes me think you must believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel", Cuomo added.

Stone joined his friend's long-shot campaign early on in 2015 but left shortly thereafter for reasons that remain in dispute.
