Trump to meet families of US troops killed in Syria

President Trump traveled to Dover Air Force Base on Saturday as the remains of four Americans killed earlier this week by a suicide bomber in Syria were returned to the U.S.

Scott A. Wirtz, a Defense Intelligence Agency civilian, died on January 16, 2019, following a terrorist attack in Manbij, Syria, while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.

Wirtz was assigned as an operations support specialist supporting Operation Inherent Resolve since February 2017.

Three other service members were hurt in the explosion, which happened at a busy restaurant during a local engagement.

"Our district is extremely proud of her and her service and we support her family 100% in their time of sorrow", Grieb said. "When I'm going to meet relatives of some of our great, great heroes that have fallen, I think it might be the toughest thing I have to do as president", Trump said.

The four were killed in the northern Syrian town of Manbij on Wednesday.

Although the coalition opposing ISIS tweeted about the attacks almost an hour before Pence's speech, a White House official claims that the administration had not "publicly confirmed the deaths at the time (Pence) spoke".

"We will continue to hit the last remnants of ISIS hard to destroy its last networks and ensure its lasting defeat", the spokesperson added, as reported by the news agency.

Trump's decision to pay tribute to the victims came just weeks after he had declared the Islamic State vanquished and vowed to pull remaining USA forces out of Syria.

Senator Lindsey Graham said on Saturday he hoped Donald Trump would slow the U.S. withdrawal from Syria until Islamic State is destroyed, warning that if not thought through, the pullout can create an "Iraq on steroids".

They were the first United States casualties following President Donald Trump's recent order to pull the military from Syria.

Trump has made one other visit to Dover during his presidency, soon after taking office. Former defense secretary Jim Mattis resigned in disagreement with Trump's Syria plan.

Meddock served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, and was on his second deployment with the USA -led coalition. "We are bringing our troops home", he announced. But many of those Kurdish fighters are US allies who have been crucial to the fight against ISIS.

Graham, who as a member of the Senate Armed Services committee has frequently visited USA troops in combat zones, said he believed the "goal of destroying ISIS is not yet accomplished".

Trump said before arriving in Dover that IS has lost nearly all its territory but "that doesn't mean you're not going to have somebody around".

Washington has also expressed concern over Turkey's plans to launch a cross-border military operation against the US-backed Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia.

"We are very proud of her service", she said. The YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are making the most of US military support while they still have it.

Earlier this week, Trump derailed plans by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other lawmakers to visit USA forces in Afghanistan, denying them access to US government aircraft.

"But that was not true, and we have continued to conduct airstrikes against the Islamic State", McGurk said.
