Unsafe powder from lost cargo found on Dutch island

Shed items included a 25kg bag of unsafe organic peroxide powder on Schiermonnikoog island.

Officials were anxious about three containers carrying toxic substances, including one with bags of peroxide powder, one of which washed ashore on the island of Schiermonnikoog.

The container ship - identified by officials as the MSC Zoe - is suspected to have lost cargo during an overnight storm off the coastal border between Germany and the Netherlands.

It was unclear how numerous containers sank to the sea bottom and how many were still floating and could pose a hazard to marine traffic or beach scavengers who turned out in response to reports of the cargo spill.

Three containers holding hazardous materials have not yet been located, the Coast Guard said.

The Dutch defence ministry said it was recalling soldiers from their Christmas leave to help clear up beaches on North Sea islands starting Friday, following requests from the mayors of Schiermonnikoog and nearby Terschelling island.

For his part, the President hasn't publicly endorsed that proposal or any other beyond his initial request for $5 billion. For Democrats, that means they will not put anything on the table beyond the current $1.3 billion for border security.

The German authorities are investigating what caused the the containers to fall off as it occurred in German waters near the island of Borkum.

They also warned the public not to touch the containers if found, but to call police or the fire brigade.

Friesland provincial authorities said the peroxide was safely removed from the beach.

An MSC statement said the containers were lost overboard during "heavy weather", and a salvage company had been hired to assist in the cleanup and search for missing items.

Volunteers collect the washed up content from containers onboard of the Panamian-flagged MSC Zoe vessel in Moddergat, on January 3, 2019.
