Venezuelan Opposition Calls For New Protests

"Any violence and intimidation against USA diplomatic personnel, Venezuela's democratic leader, Juan Guiado, or the National Assembly itself would represent a grave assault on the rule of law and will be met with a significant response", Bolton tweeted Sunday. The national security adviser tweeted that any such actions from Nicolas Maduro's forces would be considered a "grave assault on the rule of law", the BBC reports.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday that he would oppose American military intervention in Venezuela... even as Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro insists that a coup effort by opposition leader Juan Guaidó was orchestrated by the United States.

The news comes as Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Belgium threatened to recognize Venezuelan National Assembly President Juan Guaido as the nation's interim president if elections aren't called within eight days.

Washington, which has recognised Guaido as leader, had on Saturday urged the world to "pick a side" on Venezuela and financially disconnect from Maduro's government.

These protests are being led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Noam Chomsky and other notable cheerleaders of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who brought socialism to the country two decades ago. In the face of growing pressure Nicholas Maduro said "we don't want to be a North American colony". In an interview on Sunday with CNN Turk, Maduro claimed that he was the "the victim of a USA conspiracy" that had resulted in the threat to his power.

Maduro has accused the United States of promoting a coup against him and promised to stay in office.

Then there's the $65 billion in Venezuela's and state oil company PDVSA's outstanding bonds, nearly none of which are being paid and whose prices rallied 25 percent on news of Guaido's challenge to Maduro's authority.

The U.K. government said it is up to the Bank of England to decide what to do with the "significant amount" of gold it is holding under contract for the embattled Venezuelan regime of Nicolas Maduro.

The shutdown today: Workers to get paid 'in the coming days'
Trump said he would act to ensure the government workers get their back pay "very quickly, or as soon as possible". President Trump says that he has reached a deal to reopen the government for three weeks.

Carlos Luna, a professor of global relations at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, said Maduro's decision to allow interest sections represents a "loss in power".

He accused Russian Federation and China of "propping up a failed regime in the hopes of recovering billions of dollars in ill-considered investments and assistance made over the years".

Payne noted that Australia had supported the Lima Group's early call for Maduro to refrain from assuming the presidency on 10 January.

Pompeo told the Security Council on Saturday: "Let me be 100 percent clear - President Trump and I fully expect that our diplomats will continue to receive protections provided under the Vienna Convention".

Of course, Bolton also repeated the usual lines, claiming the USA intervention in Venezuela's domestic politics was about ousting an "authoritarian" leader and protecting democracy and human rights - but the comments about oil betrayed what many have suggested is the underlying reason and driving force behind the White House's interference.

Venezuela has sunk into a crushing economic crisis under Maduro's policies, with widespread food and medical shortages that have forced millions of people to starve or flee. Leading opposition figures were not allowed to stand in the election.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan voiced his support for Mr Maduro in a phone call on Thursday.
