Woman dies after getting trapped inside Toronto clothing donation bin

Woman dies after getting trapped inside Toronto clothing donation bin

On Tuesday morning, Toronto police responded to a call about a 35-year-old woman who was found trapped, without vital signs, halfway inside a donation bin.

Emergency crews were called around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday to an apartment tower at 730 Dovercourt Rd., near Bloor Street, after receiving reports that a woman was inside the bin that sits in the building's parking lot, CBC.ca report.

Maria Ventura said the woman who died often struggled to find a place to stay at night.

Firefighters had to cut open the metal box to get the woman out, but despite the best efforts of paramedics to save her she was pronounced dead at the scene, Global News reported.

The Toronto-area manufacturer of clothing donation bins has stopped producing the metal containers involved in at least two deaths.

It's not the first time a person has died after being trapped in a clothing donation box in Canada.

"Shut them all down", she said.

"It's far more hazardous than it may seem on the surface", Jonathan Gormick, a spokesman with Vancouver Fire Rescue, told CBC in mid-2018.

"Due to the compression to his or her chest and a lack of oxygen, this is kind of like a death trap".

Hopman Cup reality saddens Federer
Germany hit back fast and hard in the second to break Bencic courtesy of some great net play by Zverev, and Kerber held for 3-1. Fittingly, it was Federer who served out the match in the third set tie-break, having been unable to do so earlier in the set.

"We have asked staff to put additional monitoring of the bins and make sure they're not accessed illegally, and also causing safety concern to people using the bins", Lambert Chu, Burnaby's city manager, tells NEWS 1130.

Agro said Rangeview is advising charities to remove those bars for the time being until safer designs can be developed and built.

Jeremy Hunka of the Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver said homeless people often turn to the bins for clothing or shelter without being aware of how risky they can be.

The disturbing trend of people dying after becoming trapped inside a clothing donation bin has claimed another victim.

Toronto Police Const. Genifferjit Sidhu said that deaths such as these can be horrific.

In the last four years, British Columbia has seen five people die after becoming stuck in the bins.
