Confrontation Escalates Between India, Pakistan

The spokesman for the Pakistan Armed Forces, Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, announced the news and said that they had arrested one of the pilots.

Pakistani troops on the ground captured the pilots, he said.

And in Pakistan, MFA said the Civil Aviation Authority has closed its airspace to all commercial flights, and there have been reports of flight cancellations across Pakistan.

Local officials on the Pakistani side said at least four people had been killed and seven wounded, though it was unclear if the casualties were civilian or military.

Pakistan on Wednesday said its military had carried out airstrikes in Indian-controlled Kashmir, shooting down two Indian jets in its own airspace and capturing one of the pilots.

An Indian warplane has crashed in disputed Kashmir one day after an air strike hit insurgents inside Pakistan.

"The Pakistan Air Force was ready, they took them on, there was an engagement".

Trump Optimistic For US-China Trade Deal, Expects To Meet Xi
However, on Tuesday, Trump suggested that he might extend the March 1 deadline citing that the talks are going "very well". The president has said that any deal must include profound structural changes in China's state-led economic system.

There has not been official comment from the Indian Air Force or government, and CNN could not independently verify Pakistan's claims.

The statement came shortly after the Pakistani military shot down two Indian airplanes after they crossed the Kashmir border and captured one of the pilots.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday morning said he spoke to India's Minister of External Affairs and Pakistan's Foreign Minister.

The strike in Balakot is significant as the location is beyond Pakistan Administered Kashmir, indicating it was not merely an LoC violation but a punitive action inside Pakistani territory.

The incident came after Indian warplanes launched an air strike yesterday against what New Delhi said was a terrorist training camp in Pakistan.

Flight operations have been suspended across major airports in Pakistan's Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces on Wednesday in the wake of the escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, according to a media report.

India says it does not wish to see a further escalation of the situation with Pakistan and will continue to act with responsibility and restraint.

Pakistani and Indian troops deployed in Kashmir often trade fire.

Indian air force spokesman Anupam Banerjee in New Delhi said he has no information on Pakistan's statement. UK PM Theresa May said her country is "deeply concerned about rising tensions between India and Pakistan" and urged "dialogue and diplomatic solutions to ensure regional stability". In a press conference after the Indian attack, Pakistan's top military spokesperson strongly refuted the idea that it had been caught off-guard and promised India a befitting response at a time and place of its choosing.

New Delhi had promised to act, and on February 26 its warplanes flew into Pakistani airspace and struck what it said was a camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), the group that claimed the Kashmir bombing.
