National Enquirer owner to 'thoroughly investigate’ allegations made by Jeff Bezos

National Enquirer owner to 'thoroughly investigate’ allegations made by Jeff Bezos

That same day, the National Enquirer advertised it was publishing alleged intimate text messages between Bezos and Sanchez.

He says he was the target of "extortion and blackmail" by the publisher of the Enquirer.

In a post on the online platform Medium, Bezos said Enquirer publisher American Media Inc (AMI), led by David Pecker, a friend of President Donald Trump, was now threatening to publish intimate photos of him, if he did not call off the probe.

After ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in December for bank fraud, tax fraud, campaign finance violations, and lying to congressional investigators, prosecutors in the SDNY announced in a press release that it "previously reached a non-prosecution agreement" with AMI.

A digest of the top political stories from the Globe, sent to your inbox Monday-Friday. "So after the Mueller investigation and after AMI became involved in the investigation, there was somewhat of a falling out".

"American Media believes fervently that it acted lawfully in the reporting of the story of Mr. Bezos". After all, AMI has helped Trump in the past.

Trump has repeatedly made clear his ire over the coverage of him in The Washington Post, which Bezos owns, the latter noted.

-David Pecker, CEO of American Media, Inc.

"So sorry to hear the news about Jeff Bozo being taken down by a competitor whose reporting, I understand, is far more accurate than the reporting in his lobbyist newspaper, the Amazon Washington Post". They said they had more of my text messages and photos that they would publish if we didn't stop our investigation. Instead, they've been focusing on Sanchez's brother, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Representatives for AMI did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Bezos' post.

Since Kaepernick launched the protests, the National Football League has worked toward a settlement. A group of artists started painting murals of Kaepernick on Super Bowl Sunday as a result.

According to Bezos, the media firm had promised not to publish "d*ck pics" of him if he agreed to certain conditions.

"These communications cement AMI's long-earned reputation for weaponizing journalistic privileges, hiding behind important protections, and ignoring the tenets and objective of true journalism", Bezos wrote in his blog post. However, they added, "Nonetheless, in light of the nature of the allegations published by Mr. Bezos, the Board has convened and determined that it should promptly and thoroughly investigate the claims".

So Bezos dispatched his private security chief to find out exactly how his phone was hacked, and how photos and texts were obtained.

The Washington Post, which is owned by Bezos, publishes an article headlined "Was tabloid exposé of Bezos affair just juicy gossip or a political hit job?"

"Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail", wrote Mr Bezos, "I've made a decision to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten". The New York Times's Adam Goldman reported that COO Dylan Howard was cooperating and was "known to have a recording device in his office".

Bezos usually stays out of the public eye, frequently delegating announcements and public Amazon business updates to his executives. The company could say it was relying on the advice of its counsel or even cite First Amendment protections, she said.

U.S. media report that Mr Sanchez knows AMI's David Pecker - as well as other people with links to Mr Trump including his former campaign aides Carter Page and Roger Stone. AMI also allegedly enteredinto an immunity deal with the Department of Justice about the "catch and kill" process.

In recent months, the Trump-friendly tabloid acknowledged secretly assisting Trump's White House campaign by paying $150,000 to Playboy model Karen McDougal for the rights to her story about an alleged affair with Trump. The company then intentionally suppressed the story until after the 2016 election. He claims that "numerous" people have told their investigative team that they received and gave into blackmail threats from AMI.

"It shows how complicated and risky it is to make an agreement with National Enquirer, " Levenson said. Turns out, they were sexting each other.
