Ramses Station accident in Cairo leaves 20 dead, 40 injured

A deadly locomotive accident at Cairo's main train station was triggered by a brawl between two train conductors, Egypt's prosecutor general has determined.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the explosion of a fuel tank on a train heading into Ramses station in downtown Cairo.

The daily Al-Ahram newspaper said the train crashed and the fuel tank exploded, causing the fire, but details have not yet been confirmed.

On Wednesday, a fiery train crash killed at least 25 people at Cairo's main station, security and medical sources said.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the incident is being investigated.

Surveillance video, widely shared on social media, shows people calmly walking through the train station.

The Ramses district is among the busiest and most crowded areas of the Egyptian capital.

A video that surfaced on social media showed men and women carrying bags and personal belonging and walking on the rail platforms as the train auto crashed and exploded.

Egypt's railway authority has halted all arrivals into the station until further notice.

Ambulances rushed to the scene and firefighters struggled to get the flames under control.

Eyewitness Mina Ghaly said she saw "charred bodies" on the ground after the horrific incident.

Egypt's transportation minister sacked the head of the railway authority at the time.

The BBC notes that Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said past year that the country doesn't have the budget to fully revamp the poorly maintained train system, the wire service added.

In August 2017, 43 people were killed and more than 100 injured when two passenger trains collided outside the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.
