2 girls missing in California wilderness found safe

California police have confirmed that two young sisters who were missing for two days have been found.

They were reunited with their parents and assessed by paramedics, who said they were dehydrated and cold.

Honsal said little is yet known about how they survived the "rugged" and "extreme" environment but that they had received some wilderness training from 4-H.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said they were notified of their disappearance around 6pm after the mother and neighbors tried to search for the girls themselves.

Eight-year-old Leia Carrico and 5-year-old Caroline Carrico were last seen around 2:30 p.m. outside their home in Benbow, a small community about 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento. On Saturday, crews from Napa County and Marin County sheriff's offices joined the hunt for the girls amid occasional rain.

"This is an absolute miracle", Sheriff Honsal said on Sunday.

The girls told rescuers that they had been walking along a deer track before they go lost.

They found the girls on Sunday morning, 1.4 miles (2.3km) from where they had set off, just hours before a rain storm was due to hit.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said at a news conference on Saturday, the girls had asked their mother to go for a walk in the afternoon and the mother did not give them permission.

Ten agencies were involved in the search, including State Parks, United States Coast Guard, CAL FIRE and the National Guard. "Every county has a search and rescue team" needing more volunteers, he added.

The sheriff said that there are no signs of foul play, and the family is being "fully cooperative".

One of the first clues came when sheriff's personnel spotted signs of the girls' path: prints of their rubber boots and discarded granola bar wrappers that the children's mother recognized, according to Sheriff's Lt. Mike Findley.

"The wrappers showed us a direction from where they started to where the wrappers ended up at", Fridley said.

"She melted on the phone".
