49 people killed in shootings at two New Zealand mosques

Mass shootings at two mosques full of worshippers attending Friday prayers killed 49 people in what the prime minister said could "only be described as a terrorist attack".

"Police are aware there is extremely distressing footage relating to the incident in Christchurch circulating online", New Zealand police said in a Twitter post, via the Times LIVE.

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed that a man from his country is one of the suspects arrested.

Bush later stated that a number of improvised explosive devices, which had been attached to vehicles, had been defused after the shootings.

President Donald Trump told Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern by phone that the United States stood in solidarity with New Zealand.

After the attacks, New Zealand Prime Minster Jacinda Arden addressed the public, describing Friday as "one of the darkest day in New Zealand".

So far, it has been confirmed that 49 people have lost their lives in the attack, which took place at two mosques in Christchurch during Friday prayers.

Halifax MP Holly Lynch also took to Twitter and said: "Horrific news from New Zealand this morning". Forty-eight people, including children, are receiving treatment in Christchurch Hospital after being injured in the attack, according to New Zealand health authorities.

A spokesman for New Zealand's interior ministry said the video is likely to be classified as objectionable content under local law, and could be illegal to share.

"I've been in contact with my Australian colleagues - they have no information on them at all either", he said. It appears the shooting targeted immigrants, some of whom hid in the mosque when the shooting began.

The suspect has been charged with murder while three other people have been held in custody.

None of the victims has so far been identified but there were people from around the world in the mosque at the time of the attack.

Seven people were killed during this attack.

She also called it a "terrorist attack".

"They have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is there home".

Cops haven't ruled out the possibility of more suspects being at large.

"Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with everyone affected by the horrendous terrorist attack against Muslim worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand today".

Radio New Zealand quoted a witness inside the mosque saying he heard shots fired and at least four people were lying on the ground and "there was blood everywhere". One witness, Mohan Ibn Ibrahim, who was inside one of the mosques during the attack, told CNN that the attacker continuously shot at people inside the mosque for "10 or 15 minutes". Media reported that a gunman opened fire inside mosque in Christchurch's Hagley Park.

In 2010 and 2011 the city suffered a series of devastating earthquakes, with the most destructive at 6.3 magnitude, which killed almost 200 people and destroyed thousands of buildings.
