Chicago Plans To Bill Jussie Smollett For Investigation

He said two masked men shouted racial and anti-gay slurs, poured bleach on him, beat him and tied a rope around his neck. The sources insisted it is not an investigation, but a "review".

And in Chicago, prosecutors have dropped felony charges against actor Jussie Smollett, who was arrested last month and charged with faking an attack in January that sparked widespread outrage.

Smollett's attorney went on to say she believes her client has been victimized throughout this entire process and claimed he is innocent.

Chicago's top prosecutor said on Wednesday that her office believed actor Jussie Smollett "culpable" in the criminal case where police say he staged being the victim of a hate crime attack but said her office never meant to seal the court records. The president called the case "an embarrassment to our nation". The FBI is investigating whether he sent himself a threatening letter prior to the alleged attack.

In yet another twist to the case, all the charges against him were dropped on 26 March.

On Tuesday, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson also criticized the prosecutor's decision, saying it did not serve justice. But Foxx herself has shot down one of the more plausible alternative explanations, which was that the case was simply not almost as strong as the police had made it out to be.

The report revealed new details about the police obtaining a search warrant for Smollett's iCloud account and then sharing the data with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A letter from the city's legal department to Smollett and his attorneys said that figure covers overtime worked by more than two dozen detectives and officers who spent weeks looking into Smollett's claim.

US President Donald Trump and actor Jussie Smollett. The Chicago lawyer also gave Foxx's number to a relative of Smollett's who was concerned about the Chicago police's handling of the investigation, and hoped to have the case handed over to the FBI.

Investigators later charged Smollett with paying the two men to pretend to attack him in order to garner public sympathy for himself. She pointed to Smollett forfeiting his $10,000 bond and doing community service in return for dropping the charges.

Throughout all this, Smollett has maintained his innocence.

Chicago's chief prosecutor, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, defended her office's decision in an interview with WBEZ on Wednesday as proportionate to the charges. "So, it's not - it's not implausible", she told Guthrie.

Authorities have said Smollett created the hoax because he was unhappy with his pay on the Fox show and wanted to promote his career.

Emanuel expressed even more anger, declaring what happened to be "a whitewash of justice".
