Germany asserts independence after US warning on Huawei

-German cooperation could only continue at its current level if Chinese firms were excluded from the construction of the network.

Last week, Huawei sued the us government for banning federal agencies from purchasing Huawei equipment - a restriction in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act. Huawei and ZTE already face restrictions on the American domestic market, while USA officials are leaning on other nations to exclude China from the lucrative upgrade of wireless infrastructure to 5G standard.

While Huawei founder Ren Zhengei insists his company will not install backdoors in its 5G products, experts say the company is required by law to do so if China's government demands it.

The Chinese telecoms behemoth has strenuously denied the espionage allegations.

In Germany, Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said on Thursday on a ZDF talk show that Germany did not want to ban Huawei but said that Berlin will change the law to ensure that all components used in the 5G networks will be secure.

Alleged killer of North Korean leader's half brother Kim Jong Nam freed
Malaysian officials have never officially accused North Korea and have made it clear they don't want the trial politicised. Malaysian prosecutors earlier Monday withdraw the murder charge against Siti Aisyah, allowing her to return to Indonesia .

Altmaier told French news agency AFP he could not comment on the letter's contents, but said that: "We will respond quickly". "There will be a quick reply".

The statement comes after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a press briefing on 12 March that the United States should admit that other countries had the right make their own strategic decisions on their country's development, particularly in the area of technology.

Just last week, Huawei, which has vigorously denied the U.S.'s allegations, filed suit, challenging a USA law that restricts federal agencies from using its gear.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Berlin told dpa that having "untrusted vendors" in Germany's 5G network "could raise future questions about the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive communications". "This could lead to the progressive decoupling of the countries' technology sectors".
