Gulf, Iran, Europe reject U.S. recognizing Golan as Israeli

Israel annexed the territory in 1981, but the move was not recognized internationally. Tel Aviv occupied the latter territory during the same war.

Two of Washington's closest allies - Britain and France - joined Belgium, Germany and Poland to declare that the European position had not changed and that the Golan remained Israeli-occupied Syrian territory, in line with worldwide law enshrined in United Nations resolutions. Trump is attempting to erase years of such worldwide consensus with one stroke. Israel captured the territory from Syria in the 1967 war after Arab armies had mobilized forces near their borders with Israel.

The Arab League, Nasrallah proposed, should use its upcoming summit in Tunisia to withdraw the so-called Arab peace initiative, proposed by Saudi Arabia in 2002, and instead press for more negotiations.

"I mean the countries which are bowing down to the US and not raising their voice over Israeli occupation in Jerusalem".

"The Sultanate of Oman confirms that the Golan Heights is Syrian land occupied by Israel and that the US President's decision does not change this fact".

Lebanon said the move "violates all the rules of global law" and "undermines any effort to reach a just peace". Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu Monday tweeted that the US recognition would never legitimize Israeli occupation. It declared that Israel's "decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without global legal effect".

Pres. Trump has foolishly undermined Israel's safety by provoking all Arabs and Muslims against Israel and the United States rather than taking measures to calm the situation and find a peaceful solution.

Syria described Trump's proclamation as a "blatant attack" on its sovereignty and territorial integrity and said it had every right to reclaim the Golan.

After Trump's decision, Russian Federation warned it would prompt a "new wave" of tensions in the Middle East region.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said: "No one could imagine that a person in America comes and gives land of a nation to another occupying country, against global laws and conventions ..."

"Our position in relation to the Golan Heights is very clear, it comes clearly established by the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly", he told reporters.

"Naturally, this undermines the foundations and principles of the United Nations and worldwide law since the founding of this organization".

Sudan on Tuesday condemned a decision by the US administration recognizing Israel's sovereignty over Golan Heights. On the contrary, he has ignorantly announced that it is easy to solve the Middle East problem and has irresponsibly appointed his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has no experience in diplomacy and knows nothing about the Middle East, to be in charge of the Arab-Israeli peace plan.

Speaking at the emergency Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Istanbul Friday, Erdoğan said Turkey will never allow the legitimization of Israel's invasion of Golan Heights.

"In accordance with global law, Canada does not recognize permanent Israeli control over the Golan Heights".

As rockets were being launched deep into central Israel by the terror group Hamas in Gaza, the importance of the Golan Heights for Israel's security was on full display.
