SpaceX successfully launches new Dragon crew capsule

SpaceX successfully launches new Dragon crew capsule

The module was carried safely into space by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, which launched from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The Boeing and SpaceX launch systems are aimed at ending United States reliance on Russian rockets for rides to the $100 billion orbital research laboratory, which flies about 250 miles (402 km) above Earth, at about $80 million per ticket.

The key test flight is aiming to prove to NASA that astronauts will be safe on future flights. No private company has ever launched humans into orbit, and during a webcast of the launch, SpaceX employees could be seen packed into the main foyer of the company's headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif., cheering each milestone.

NASA stopped its Space Shuttle programme eight years ago.

The capsule is due to stay on the ISS for a period of five days, where it will undergo testing from the station's resident astronauts.

For SpaceX, which Musk founded in 2002, sending an astronaut into orbit would be a culmination of years of hard work and high-risk investment.

If the trip goes off without a hitch and all goes to plan with a subsequent emergency escape test, SpaceX will begin transporting astronauts to the ISS later this year.

If R. Kelly's convicted, his inner circle could be criminally liable: lawyer
Michael Avenatti , a lawyer for one of the accusers, said that Kelly "deserves to be locked up for the rest of his life". Kelly , whose full name is Robert Kelly, will remain incarcerated for now, as he has been unable to post bail.

The dummy that will ride in the capsule - which SpaceX's Hans Koenigsmann prefers to call a "smartie" - has been nicknamed Ripley in honor of the character played by Sigourney Weaver in the "Alien" movies.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a demo Crew Dragon spacecraft on an uncrewed test flight to the International Space Station lifts off.

The historic unmanned test flight marks the first time a commercially-built and operated American crew spacecraft and rocket was launched to the ISS. We went to the moon and we won. The US space agency has been paying Russian Federation roughly $81 million for a single seat on the Soyuz spaceship every time it needs to ferry an astronaut to or from the ISS.

The launch comes nine years after NASA invested about £38million ($50million) into its Commercial Crew Program. "And then re-entry", Musk said at a press conference, held in the Kennedy Space Center, when asked which stages of the Dragon 2 mission he anxious about most. But he stressed it was more important to move deliberately so "we get it right". Previous Dragon vehicles have been grabbed and hauled to the docking port by the station's robotic arm. In this case, the spacecraft will fly on to the space station and attach itself.

If successful, the mission launched on Saturday and the upcoming manned launch will allow NASA to certify the new spacecraft for regular flights to the space station.

California's SpaceX firm has carried out a demonstration of a new rocket and capsule combination.
