A deadly storm system now threatens 90 million people with destructive weather

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that the tornado that touched down in Shelby and moved across Richland County Sunday was rated EF-2 with maximum wind speeds of 120 to 125 miles per hour.

The watch includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming and Livingston counties.

The affected areas will get heavy rains, winds with gusts of up to 70 miles per hour (110 kph) and the possibility of hail, NWS Weather Prediction Center in Maryland said. The children were in a auto with their parents, when a massive tree fell on their vehicle due to strong winds, killing both minors on the spot.

Heavy rain is expected to move through the tri-state area, but wind gusts will pick up by the afternoon.Thunder and lightning has been reported throughout parts of the region. There were no immediate reports of injuries there. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.

Two children, siblings aged three and eight, were killed on Saturday when a tree fell on the vehicle in which they were sitting in Pollok, Texas, said a spokeswoman for the Angelina County Sheriff's Department. The same system caused damage in Columbus, Mississippi.

Robertson County Sheriff Gerald Yezak told The Associated Press a tornado hit the small Central Texas city of Franklin, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences.
