Amateur women opt for caddies over daddies at Augusta

A lot of fathers found themselves out of jobs on Friday as golfers playing in the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) opted for club caddies over daddies for the final round.

The first player to hit a tee shot in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur more importantly struck the last putt - a 20-footer for birdie that capped a frenetic finish and punctuated a historic day for women's golf.

"It´s just exciting to be a part of history", Lopez said.

While dads may know their daughters better than anyone, local caddies, some who have worked Augusta National for decades, know the course and particularly the baffling greens.

"It will be unbelievable, driving down Magnolia Lane and putting yourself in the shoes of all of the fantastic pros you watched on TV as a young girl - and we will be on TV this time as well".

"She's not afraid to be great", Fassi said, "and that's what makes her great". According to USA Today, Kupcho's migraine was so bad that her vision was blurry during holes 8-11, and her caddy had to help her read putts.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - During Augusta National's controversial stance involving membership, the truth often missed was the club welcomed women - although not as members - to play the storied course going back to the days of founder Bobby Jones.

"The ending wasn't what I would have liked but it was still unbelievable to compete at Augusta for the first time", Fassi said.

Augusta's trademark lightning-quick and undulating greens took a toll on rivals as Kupcho and Fassi battled beneath the Georgia pines in fabled Amen Corner, women shining for the first time over some of golf's most famous holes.

"I think my hands were shaking on my first tee shot, but the course is I think we all know" Caterina Don said.

And then she pured a 7-iron that caught the slope and rolled inside 10 feet on the 16th hole, the birdie creating a two-shot swing and giving her a comfortable cushion to play the closing stretch.

Sharvin carded a round of 68 to sit four shots back of overnight leader Daan Huizing, with Michael Hoey a further shot adrift after he opened his tournament with a three-under 69. Kwon was among nine players who made par on the first extra hole, all of them advancing when Alessia Nobilio of Italy and Ainhoa Olarra of Spain made bogey.

". It's a really, really great opportunity and no one else is ever going to get that chance to be in the first 30 women to play here so I'm really grateful to be out here this week and play well".

The LPGA legends enjoyed the same honorary starter moment in a similar fashion to how Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and the late Arnold Palmer have at the Masters.
