Former Clinton & Obama White House Lawyer Greg Craig Indicted in Mueller Probe

The Post and other media said Craig faces charges in relation to legal work he did for Ukraine in 2012 after leaving the White House to join Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Update: This article was updated after the Department of Justice announced it had indicted Craig.

The federal investigation began as an offshoot of the Mueller probe that was later handed off to Manhattan federal prosecutors.

"Mr. Craig is not guilty of any charge", his attorneys said in a statement. The federal scrutiny on Craig reportedly derives from the government's investigation into Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, who pleaded guilty to charges related to his lobbying for Ukraine. If filed, the charges would come about three months after Craig's former law firm agreed to pay more than $4.6 million and publicly acknowledge that it failed to register with the government for its work for the Ukraine.

Craig served under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2010 and is a prominent Democratic attorney. They did not, however, say why he would be charged.

In making the announcement, the official, John Demers, pointed to the Skadden settlement - and alluded to the Craig case - as having triggered the department's decision to escalate its enforcement in that area.

In 2013, the Justice Department inquired whether the firm's work for Mr. Yankovich required it to register as a foreign agent of the Ukrainian government.

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich hired Craig's firm to provide a report justifying his imprisonment of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, a political rival.

Manafort used the report as an effort to improve Mr. Yanukovych's image in the US and overseas.

They created the image of a black hole by compiling data from eight earth-based telescopes positioned around the world. The news, said to be "ground-breaking", will be announced at six simultaneous press conferences around the world.

He faces charges of making false statement and concealing material information in connection with his Ukraine work. It admitted it was paid $4.6 million for the report, and not the $12,000 the Ukrainian government said at the time. According to the Skadden settlement, Craig wrote a note to himself saying, "The evidence of criminal intent - i.e., that she actually meant to commit a crime - is virtually non-existent".

At the time, Manafort and the team of American lawyers and lobbyists working on the account never registered their activities with the Justice Department.

"Mr. Craig has no interest in misleading the FARA Unit because he had not done anything that required his registration".

In the statement Wednesday, Craig's lawyers denied that he lied to the government or his firm.

Even so, the public relations firm eventually reached out to a reporter identified by Craig, offering an early copy of the report as well as an interview with Craig.

"Mr. Craig repeatedly refused requests that he participate in Ukraine's media and lobbying campaign to promote the Tymoshenko Report", they wrote. "Proper registration under the statute allows the US government and the American people to evaluate the statements and activities of individuals who are serving as agents of foreign principals".

In the last few years, the Justice Department has brought several high-profile prosecutions involving FARA.

Yanukovych was one of the main lobbying clients of Manafort, who is now serving a 7 1/2-year prison sentence for lobbying violations and financial crimes.
