Iran leader appoints new head of revolutionary guards

The new chief commander of the IRGC Hossein Salami, appointed after the US blacklisting, has warned in the past that Iran could use its cruise and ballistic missiles and drones, mines, speedboats, and missile launchers in the Gulf area to confront the United States.

Iranian state media reported on April 21 that Khamenei appointed General Hossein Salami as the new head of the IRGC, replacing Mohammad Ali Jafari, who had been in charge for more than 11 years.

Irans supreme leader has appointed a new head to the countrys powerful Revolutionary Guard, just after the US designated the paramilitary force a terrorist group. Iran responded by designating the USA military's Central Command as a terrorist organization.

The Guards, created after the 1979 Islamic Revolution to bolster the regime, is deeply embedded in the country's economy and was already under heavy sanctions before the terrorism designation.

In his 24-match ODI career, Yasir has picked up only 23 wickets at an economy of 5.22 and with a six-wicket haul to his credit. The squad included 11 players who won the Champions Trophy in England by defeating India in the final.

In IRGC, he has held a number of responsibilities, including the commander of IRGC University of Command and Staff, operations deputy of IRGC Joint Staff, and commander of IRGC Air Force. When the Iran-Iraq War started in 1980, he joined the IRGC.

Although Iran insists that its ballistic missile program is purely defensive, Salami threatened in November 2017 that if European governments insisted on negotiating over Iran's missile program, Iran would increase the range of the missiles to reach Europe. Tehran has warned that it has missiles with a range of up to 2,000 kms (1,242 miles), putting Israel and USA military bases in the region within reach.

In specific threats against Israel, Salami warned that any new war would "result in their termination". It's the latest in a series of steps Washington has taken to ramp up pressure on Iran since President Donald Trump quit the multinational nuclear accord with the Islamic Republic past year and reimposed sanctions.
