Over half a million United Kingdom children not vaccinated against measles

According to the report, 287,000 Canadian children born between 2010 and 2017 went unvaccinated for measles, the seventh-highest among high-income countries.

Henrietta Fore, executive director at Unicef, said: "The measles virus will always find unvaccinated children".

Between 2010 and 2017, an average of 21.1 million children missed their first dose of the measles vaccine, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), and the situation is definitely a cause for concern as widening pockets of unvaccinated children have created a pathway to the measles outbreaks now spreading around the world. France comes next with 608,000 unvaccinated children, followed by the United Kingdom with 527,000, Argentina with 438,000, and Italy with 435,000.

Meanwhile, in low- and middle-income countries, the situation is critical. In Nigeria, almost 4 million children under the age of one missed out of the vaccine's first dose in 2017.

More than 20 million children a year missed out on the measles vaccine across the world between 2010 and 2017, laying a path of exposure to a virus that is now causing disease outbreaks globally, a United Nations report said yesterday.

An estimated 110,000 people, a lot of them children, died from measles in 2017, a 22% rise on the previous year.

Children who have not been given the MMR vaccine could be excluded from school to prevent the spread of disease, the Health Secretary has suggested.

Worryingly, the trend in unvaccinated children seems to be rising.

The anti-vaxx movement has been blamed for the USA being hit with more measles cases in the first three months of this year than in the whole of 2018.

According to a CNN analysis of data from state and local health departments, there have been 681 measles cases across 22 states this year - the highest number of measles cases on record since the disease was declared eliminated nationwide in 2000.

However, two doses of MMR vaccine are required to ensure full protection from measles.

Although the average uptake of the first dose is relatively high at 85 percent, uptake of the second is just 67 percent.

Mr Welfare said uptake of vaccinations was "not high enough" and this has "really been illustrated" by the "huge increase" during this recent outbreak.

The association called for an easy access to facilities for all parts of the population and sufficient funding to deliver fully-resourced services.

"There is a voluntary system for childhood vaccination system in the UK".

NAN reports that the theme for this year's African Vaccination Week is: 'Protected Together: Vaccines Work!', emphasizing the power of vaccines in saving lives and keeping everyone healthy, from infants to elders. We need vastly improved awareness campaigns, publicising the benefits of vaccination and working towards removing apathy and indecision.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that measles is a highly contagious disease that accounts for 13 per cent of all vaccine-preventable deaths in children younger than five years in Africa.
