Red Wings announce news conference with Steve Yzerman this afternoon

An announcement Friday that former Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman has been named that team's general manager provides additional clarity to the executive search by Seattle's incoming National Hockey League franchise.

The Red Wings made the announcement on Twitter early Friday morning.

Yzerman spent his entire 22-season National Hockey League playing career (1983 to 2006) with the Red Wings.

Holland will remain with Detroit, signing a multi-year extension while moving into a senior vice president position.

The Hall of Famer spent his entire 22-year playing career with Detroit, winning three Stanley Cups as captain and amassing 1,755 points. He built Tampa Bay into a perennial contender in eight seasons as general manager, making three trips to the conference final and an advancing to the 2015 Stanley Cup Final where the Lightning lost to Chicago.

Londonderry riots: Journalist Lyra McKee shot dead in 'terrorist incident'
Police blamed the New IRA for McKee's murder and a for bomb attack at the Derry City Courthouse previous year . She was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital in a police land rover but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The press conference is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.at Little Caesars Arena.

Ilitch and Holland sat on that thought, though, because September isn't the time to hire a general manager. His hiring puts pressure on the Rangers, who had a pipe dream of landing Yzerman to complete their rebuild. He had served as the Wings' GM since 1997. The man adored by fans and affectionately known as The Captain is back.

Detroit drafted Yzerman No. 4 overall in 1983 and he helped turn around the franchise.

Yzerman's family remained in Detroit while he was with the Lightning, and he commuted during his time on the job. He began his post-playing career as vice president of hockey operations under Holland in Detroit and was part of the organization as a Stanley Cup victor in 2008 before leaving to lead the Lightning.

The Red Wings finished 32-40-10 this season, 14th in the Eastern Conference and 24 points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
