Trump says he will award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom

The Presidential Medal of Freedom (along with the Congressional Gold Medal) is the highest award that can be awarded to a civilian in the United States.

Woods' victory marked his first Masters victory in 14 years, after a series of back problems and personal problems threatened to end his career.

Charles Sifford, who was the first African American to play on the PGA Tour, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014 by Barack Obama.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -President Donald Trump said Monday that he'll award golfer Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, after Woods won his fifth Masters title over the weekend.

With his win at the Masters on Sunday, Tiger Woods put a cap on one of the greatest individual comeback stories of all time.

Trump and Woods have been friends for several years, having dined and played golf together on a number of occasions, including February 2 of this year.

Woods' relationship with Trump is well-known.

Trump appeared to follow the action at this year's Masters closely, tweeting well-wishes to the field on Saturday and encouraging people to tune in when Woods had the lead with just two holes left to play on Sunday.

The victory for Woods at Augusta represented an epic comeback, almost 11 years after his last victory in a major tournament.

Trump handed out his first medals a year ago, making a posthumous award to Elvis and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and baseball legend Babe Ruth.
