U.S. measles outbreak triggers quarantine at two Los Angeles universities

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block issued a statement on Wednesday, April 24, saying the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health had notified the university that one of its students had contracted the measles.

The quarantine order for students and staff who may have been exposed to measles at two Los Angeles universities requires them to remain at home until they provide evidence of immunity or the risk period expires.

On Wednesday, April 24, the Department of Public Health chose to quarantine 119 students and eight faculty members until their immunity could be determined.

As of Thursday, the two universities had reported a total of 280 students and faculty members under quarantine. "Majority don't sign in or out, so we have a lot of exposure to folks that we actually can't identify", said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, L.A. County Department of Public Health director.

Some students and employees at two Los Angeles universities have been quarantined due to possible contact with the measles virus, official said Thursday.

Meanwhile, "UCLA says some people could remain in quarantines for up to 48 hours before they prove immunity".

The number of measles cases in the USA has climbed to almost 700 this year, including five in Los Angeles County and 38 altogether in California. He says fewer than 50 students and faculty members have isolated themselves at their houses off campus while officials determine if they've been vaccinated or have immunity.

The quarantine orders apply only to those who may have come in contact with the virus and can not show documented proof of vaccinations.

At Cal State LA, school officials said there may have been exposure to measles at Library North on April 11 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The number of cases of measles in California has more than doubled in the last week, from 15 to 38, said the state Department of Public Health.

She says the state typically sees fewer than two dozen cases a year. Most of those cases have been in unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

The Department of Public Health has concluded that there is now no known risk related to measles at the Library North at this time.

At UCLA, one "student diagnosed with measles possibly exposed 500 people to measles", the LA Times adds.

Measles are highly contagious and can be transmitted through coughing or sneezing.

CSU, a sprawling public university with 23 campuses, has enforced similar guidelines in a bid to mitigate the risk of its thousands of students and staff catching measles.

The quarantine affects 198 Cal State LA employees who were at the library, including 71 employees who are also students, the university statement said.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the milestone Wednesday, saying that it has counted 695 cases in 22 states this year. "Make sure you and your family are fully vaccinated before traveling internationally".

Of the 2019 cases, 14 were from worldwide travelers, 22 cases were transmitted by travelers to people in California and two cases are of unknown origin, the agency said.

Anyone who develops measles symptoms should contact their doctor by phone before visiting their doctor's office.

Measles usually causes fever, runny nose and an all-over rash but in a small number of cases can lead to deadly complications such as pneumonia and swelling of the brain.
