WWE Invites John Oliver to WrestleMania After "Last Week Tonight" HBO Segment

WWE Invites John Oliver to WrestleMania After

Oliver initially praised WWE to start for being entertaining, describing himself as a fan of the product, but it quickly turned into something much deeper as the issues over wrestlers' contracts were delved into.

For those of you that missed it, you should go out of your way to watch Sunday's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" on HBO. Oliver highlighted the number of untimely deaths of WWE Superstars, as well as the company's lack of health insurance for its wrestlers.

John Oliver is clearly a clever and humorous entertainer, however, the subject matter covered in his WWE segment is no laughing matter.

Courtois reiterates desire for 'best friend' Hazard to join Real
Karim Benzema scored a dramatic late victor as Real Madrid came from behind to beat bottom side Huesca in a La Liga thriller. The 26-year-old was dropped by Zidane after the Frenchman was installed as manager for the second time.

Oliver described Vince McMahon as an "a**hole" in both his on-screen character and his real-life persona, and played clips from the likes of Jesse Ventura and Bret "The Hitman" Hart criticising McMahon for past actions.

Oliver discussed exactly what it means that WWE talent are classified as independent contractors.

Fans have even fronted several GoFundMe campaigns for wrestlers' medical or funeral expenses, "which is heartwarming, but frankly, fans shouldn't be the ones shouldering that responsibility" for a league that does not provide its stars adequate healthcare or compensation for the long-term consequences of professional wrestling. "Remember, [wrestlers are] still responsible for their own health insurance, and while the company says it pays for addiction treatment for former wrestlers, that doesn't really address the underlining issues that get them hooked on pain medication in the first place". It's a little less great to hear them gasp at graphs of wrestler deaths and footage of Vince McMahon losing his cool during interviews, but I think this is the kind of moral ambiguity we live with as fans every day.
