Barr's appearance at House hearing still up in the air

Barr rejected the additional rounds of questioning, CNN, NBC News and the Hill reported.

Per the source, Nadler wants all committee members to have five minutes of questioning each, and also for each party's counsels to be able to participate during an additional 30 minutes of questioning per side.

Barr also declined Nadler's proposal to allow members to question him in a closed-door session to discuss the redacted portions of Mueller's report.

President Donald Trump said his administration would fight all subpoenas, adding, "Democrats are trying to win 2020".

The Democratic aide said there was precedent for committee staff to question Cabinet-level officials and Senate-confirmed officials, citing political scandals including the Watergate break-in of the 1970s and the Iran-Contra scandal of 1987. "Therefore, members of Congress should be the ones doing the questioning". In a confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh a year ago, for example, Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee hired an outside prosecutor to question a witness who had accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault. A redacted version of the report was later released after substantial pressure from congressional Democrats.

"The attorney general agreed to appear before Congress", Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said in a statement. "He remains happy to engage with members on their questions regarding the Mueller report".

Killed, 3 Injured In Shooting At San Diego Synagogue
Those injured in the shooting Saturday were Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, Noya Dahan, 8, and Almog Peretz, 34 , he said. The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, hate crime and federal civil rights violation.

Barr is scheduled to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday and the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Barr is threatening to skip his planned appearance on Thursday, the aide told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "The attorney general isn't a fact witness, and this committee's investigations - as Democrat leadership reminds us daily - don't constitute impeachment, so Democrats have yet to prove their demands anything but abusive and illogical in light of the transparency and good faith the attorney general has shown our committee".

Barr's refusal to attend the hearing could worsen his already contentious relationship with congressional Democrats over the release of the report, who feel that Barr is "spinning" the report in President Trump's favor.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep.

Barr's scheduled testimony comes ahead of House Democratic plans for Mueller to also appear next month to discuss the report and investigation.
