Georgia Gov. Kemp signs 'heartbeat' abortion ban

Georgia Gov. Kemp signs 'heartbeat' abortion ban

The signing Tuesday morning caps weeks of protests at the state Capitol and marks the beginning of a possibly costly legal battle.

At the bill signing, Governor Kemp recognized that the bill will likely be "challenged in the court of law" but said Georgia will "always continue to fight for life".

"We will fight this awful bill because this is about our patients' lives", said Dr. Leana Wen, the president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. They are pushing abortion bans in an attack on the high court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, which legalized abortion nationwide until a fetus is developed enough to live outside a woman's uterus.

The signing of the bill is nearly sure to cause a long legal battle that Republicans and other supporters hope will land in the U.S. Supreme Court as a challenge to Roe v. Wade, given that two new conservative justices now sit on the Supreme Court, AJC notes.

Brian Kemp will sign the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act into law, sending a clear message to many pro-abortion opponents in Hollywood and Washington that their intimidation tactics have failed. That can be as early as six weeks, before many women even realize they are pregnant.

While running his gubernatorial campaign, Kemp promised to enact the "toughest abortion bill in the country".

The legislation allows for some exceptions, including in cases of rape or incest if a woman files a police report, or when the life of the pregnant woman is threatened.

HBO Edited The Starbucks Cup 'Mistake' Out Of 'Game Of Thrones' Scene
He added that mistakes were generally rare on the show as "prop people and decorators are so, you know, so on it 1,000 percent". We're sorry! Besides, we needed a bit of a pick me after some of our favourite Game of Thrones characters died last week .

The Writers Guild of America had said Kemp's signing the law would force talent "in our industry" to "leave the state or decide not to bring productions there".

That has raised concerns among abortion-rights advocates about expanding "abortion deserts", described as major cities that are at least 100 miles (160 km) from an abortion provider.

"The legislature's bold action reaffirms our priorities and who we are as a state".

Heartbeat laws are no final solution to our modern culture of death, but by acknowledging and protecting life so early after conception, such legislation obliterates numerous false talking points the pro-abortion camp depends on. And six-week abortion bans, like Georgia's, are up by 62 percent, according to the study.

A judge has blocked the implementation of the Kentucky law, while the MS law is set to come into effect in July. "The idea is to kick off a court case and ultimately is to get this before the U.S. Supreme Court, with the anticipation that the court is looking to undermine or overturn Roe v. Wade".

"If leaders can silence [the voices of Georgians] at the ballot box, they can ignore [their voices] when in office", Abrams said. "And so what this means is that the women are going to have to do more extreme things".

"Planned Parenthood will be suing the State of Georgia".
