Hollywood Icon Doris Day Has Died at 97

Doris Day, the singer and actress whose stardom in the 1950s and '60s made her among the most popular screen actresses in history, has died.

Doris Day, the United States screen icon famed for her wholesome, girl-next-door appeal in a string of box office hits, died Monday at age 97, her foundation said in a statement to USA media.

Legendary actress and singer Doris Day has died at age 97, according to AP.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed her death to the Associated Press, saying she had recently contracted pneumonia. She remained for several years one of the country's top box-office draws.

She was married four times: first, to trombonist Al Jorden in 1941.

She added: "I think the reason people liked our movies is because they could tell how much we liked each other". The song "Secret Love", which Day performs in the film, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The running joke, attributed to both Groucho Marx and actor-composer Oscar Levant, was that they had known Day "before she was a virgin". "She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed".

Many of her musical works, including Sentimental Journey and Que Sera Sera, are still beloved by many worldwide to this day. The league continues to lobby on behalf of animal rights, while the foundation operates as an animal welfare charity.

Despite Day's perpetually sunny image, her life was marked by periods of physical, emotional and financial abuse. My mother drifting around doing housework while wistfully singing Que Sera Sera, sounding as if she really wanted to be somewhere else, such as romantically walking down Broadway or across Hollywood. Day understood that too, although she never tried to exploit it either.

She retired when the show ended, making it her last film or television role.

The documentation showed that the actress was given her pre-fame name of Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on 3 April 1922 by her parents Alma and William Kappelhoff of Cincinnati.

Our hearts go out to Doris Day's loved ones during their time of loss. Her final marriage was to Barry Comden, from 1976 to 1981.
