Venezuela's Guaido calls for uprising in video with troops

Juan Guaido, head of Venezuela's opposition-run congress, declares himself interim president of Venezuela, during a rally demanding President Nicolas Maduro's resignation in Caracas, Venezuela, last Wednesday.

Venezuelan Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez later tweeted the government was confronting a small group of "military traitors" seeking to promote a coup.

Venezuela has been rocked by protests since January 10, when Maduro was sworn in for a second term following a vote boycotted by the opposition.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said there will be "hell to pay" if Maduro's "illegitimate military" resorts to violence against Guaido and his supporters.

US National Security Advisor John Bolton offered no evidence that Mr Maduro's loyalists were preparing to abandon him.

President Trump on Tuesday warned Cuba that he would slap the island nation with a "full and complete embargo" if its military didn't stop supporting Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.

"To [Guaido], the National Assembly and all the freedom-loving people of Venezuela who are taking to the streets today". It should stand by the National Assembly and the legitimate institutions against the usurpation of democracy.

"I want to tell the Venezuelan people: This is the moment to take to the streets and accompany these patriotic soldiers", said Lopez, who had been detained since 2014 for leading anti-government protests. "We are with you!" tweeted Vice President Mike Pence.

Guaido also called on public to took to the streets to support the "democratic forces" and "restore country's freedom".

Meanwhile, the US, one of about 50 countries that has recognized Guaido as the country's legitimate leader, has imposed sanctions on Caracas in an effort to curb its worldwide oil sales.

He appeared alongside formerly jailed opposition leader Leopoldo López, who said he'd been freed from house arrest by military officers loyal to the opposition.

Colombian President Ivan Duque, for his part, backed the coup attempt in Venezuela.

United States Sen. Marco Rubio, a vocal critic of Maduro, urged Venezuela's military to support Guaido on Twitter. He said the soldiers were joining him to protect the country's constitution.

Internet observatory NetBlocks reported "multiple internet services" were restricted in Venezuela following Guaido's appeal.

Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino on Twitter rejected what he called an attempt by a "subversive movement" to generate "panic and terror".
