FCC: Phone companies can block robocalls

According to a press release from the FCC, robocalls account for about 60% of their yearly complaints.

The companies would not need their customers' permission to block the calls. Call-blocker YouMail estimates that about a third of robocalls come from debt collectors and companies pitching cruises or insurance.

Basically, handling robocalls costs phone companies money. Currently, blocking such robocalls is available on an opt-in basis, but many customers are not aware of this option. That includes local utility outages, healthcare reminders and vehicle recall notices, they said, which they feared might be labeled as spam.

But questions remain about whether patrons may perhaps have to pay for such services and products, must carriers in the extinguish spark off them.

SHAKEN/STIR standards provide digitally validated assurance that a call you received originated from a real source rather than one that has been spoofed or faked.

YouMail's estimate of 4.7 billion robocalls bombarding Americans in May actually represented the second consecutive month showing a decline - though the problem is still seriously out of control, since the latest total means we've seen about 25 billion robocalls in the U.S. year to date.

Says FCC chairman Ajit Pai: "There is one thing in our country this day that unites Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, socialists and libertarians, vegetarians and carnivores, Ohio Disclose and MI followers: It's that they're ill and drained of being bombarded by unwanted robocalls". In a statement, he said he doubts the technology can always differentiate between legitimate and scam calls. "My message to them is simple: The FCC will stand with American consumers, not with those who are badgering them with unwanted robocalls", Pai said.

FCC commissioners conceded that the vote will not end all unwanted calls and urged carriers to take further steps to block them. Robocall solutions "should be free to consumers", said Rosenworcel.

A bill to crack down on unwanted robocalls sailed through the Senate on Thursday, adding to a push by Congress to defeat the growing problem of phone scams and nuisance calls.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai proposed the order last month, saying it "could be a big benefit for consumers who are sick and exhausted of robocalls".

A bipartisan proposal obliging the phone companies to introduce call authentication systems still has to pass the vote of the House. "There is nothing in our decision today that prevents carriers from charging consumers for this blocking technology to stop robocalls". "Full stop", Rosenworcel said.

"The TRACED Act would help strengthen the FCC's ability to combat illegal robocalls", Pai said in a statement, "and we would welcome these additional tools to fight this scourge".

The rules enable for reliable callers to register a criticism in the occasion that they really feel robocall technologies indulge in unfairly blocked their calls, Pai said.
