Trump still threatening tariffs on Mexico -- and more on China

What happened in the negotiations?

Mexican officials will seek to persuade the White House in talks hosted by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday that their government has done enough to stem immigration and avoid looming tariffs.

Republicans are mute preserving out hope that the tariffs can also furthermore be averted.

Central American migrants, moving in a caravan through Juchitan, Oaxaca are pictured atop a train known as "The Beast" while continuing their journey toward the United States, in Mexico on April 26, 2019.

Underscoring the scope of the border problem, the Department of Homeland Security announced separately that U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions of migrants illegally crossing the border hit the highest level in more than a decade in May: 132,887 apprehensions, including a record 84,542 adults and children together, 36,838 single adults and 11,507 children traveling alone.

Trump, in Europe, quickly rebuffed the NY lawmaker, saying on Twitter, "Can you imagine Cryin' Chuck Schumer saying out loud, for all to hear, that I am bluffing with respect to putting Tariffs on Mexico".

There are reasons to be skeptical that the tariffs with actually materialize.

Yet top White House officials have suggested that Trump will drop the tariffs if he gets an offer he likes from Mexico, which has already moved to beef up its enforcement activities.

Separately, migrant rights group People Without Borders (Pueblo Sin Fronteras) said two of its members had also been detained: its leader, Irineo Mujica, in the northern state of Sonora, and another activist, Cristobal Sanchez, in Mexico City.

Later he stated that it was wrong to report that he had called Meghan "nasty", despite the interview being recorded. She'll be very good. "I congratulated him and I think he's a terrific guy", Trump told ITV .

But leftist Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he wants to persuade Washington to help tackle the causes of migration by investing in Central America to create jobs and speed up economic development.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, had also opposed the tariffs, which Trump threatened to increase to 25 percent if Mexico didn't stop asylum seekers from entering the U.S. over the southern border.

But the threat of Mexico tariffs, coming on the heels of new tariffs on Chinese goods, has shaken Wall Street and prompted Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome H. Powell to say on Tuesday that the central bank is prepared to take action Trump's trade wars weaken the economy, presumably by cutting interest rates. "There are a good number of Republican senators who have expressed both publicly and privately to the White House their concerns about this".

Republican senators are pledged to block Trump's plan. Mexico bought about $1.5 billion worth of American hams and other pork products in 2017, making it the sector's top export market by volume.

Tony Wayne, a former US ambassador to Mexico, said the two sides could have a good meeting and reach a deal, but still not satisfy the "wild card" president.

And the US president has reportedly faced resistance from some of his own advisers, including US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, an architect of Mr Trump's China trade policy.

'There is nothing more important than borders, ' Trump said during a news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May in London.
